We shall read the tender meaning

Of the sorrows and alarms, As we trod the desert, leaning On His everlasting arms; And His rest will be the dearer

When we think of weary ways, And His light will shine the clearer As we muse on cloudy days.

THE CHRISTIAN'S LOT.

DANIEL xii. 13.

GOD said one word to Daniel-the last word in this book: "Go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days." Sweet word for the servant of God closing a life of devotedness to Him! Thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot!" Such shall be the word to all who cast in their lot with God. They shall have the sweet assurance, ere they pass through the dark river of Jordan, that they are passing on to their rest. They have cast in their lot with Jesus. With Him they shall rest. With Him they shall dwell for ever. "He that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in His throne."

Reader, Daniel knew God. It was no abstraction, no form, no dogma, no creed. It was God Himself. Do you know Christ, or do you know of Christ? It is one thing to know of Him; it is quite another to know Him. "Thousands know of our Queen, but only a few know her. Yet how many identify

knowing of God with knowing God! A man reads about God, hears about God, thinks about God, sees God in nature, traces God in providence, admires God in revelation, and then he thinks-I know God. All the time he knows not God. It is only OF God.

"To know God is much closer and more personal. It is to have heard Him speaking to us as none other ever has spoken to us. It is to have seen sin in the light of His presence, and heard Him saying, Thy sins are forgiven thee.' It is to come into spiritual contact with God. It is to have seen Him with faith's eye, to have grasped Him with faith's hand as a grand reality, an actual living presence. It is to have felt the sunshine of His smile; to have felt what He is in His breakings, and what He is in his healings, of our inward spirit. Till there have been some such passages between your soul and God, you can never know Him.” This is what goes to make real religion. This is conversion. This is holiness. This is peace. This will be heaven. All the rest is merely to know of God. This is to know God.

It is this, that

Yes, Chris

And what is our joy in Christ? Christ knows not of us, but that He knows us. “I know my sheep, and am known of mine." tian reader, Jesus knows you, not of you. Jesus, not of Jesus. He knows all about your heaven on earth is that you know Him.

You know

you; and

"There are some who will read these words to

whom, I fear, the things of God will bring little or no solemnity, they are so used to them. They read the Word, but the message of mercy is just a pleasant tale. The theme is a familiar one. They are conversant with the way of salvation as much as with any other familiar subject. Grace has reached their understanding, but it has not taken hold of their hearts. They can define faith, but they cannot use it. They can repeat the promises, while they do not hold one. They are learned to speak well, and are well acquainted with the Bible, and they know of Christ. Their lives all the time are unchanged. They live selfishly. Their tempers are unchanged. Their desires are covetous. Their tastes are worldly. And yet they can talk fluently about the love of God. But follow such

people to their own rooms. Is there secret communion ? Where is the unseen delight of a soul feeding upon God's Word? Where is the tenderness of a soul that feels the touches of God's Holy Spirit? Where is the sensitive conscience? Where is hidden purity? Where is the spiritual conflict? Where is the image of Christ? What can all that knowledge of theirs avail? Is a man's intellect the man ? Is not the living soul the man ? Has not grace been received in vain ? Is there not the name to live while the soul is dead?"

Reader, be a Christian. Let your life speak for God. All things else are but as the shadow. This only is substance. Believe in Jesus, love Jesus,

follow Jesus; and your end will be that of the You will enter into "rest," and

stand in your lot in the resurrection-morning.

O meet me in the valley,

When heart and flesh shall fail,
And softly, safely lead me on,
Until within the veil.

Then faith shall turn to gladness
To find myself with Thee,
And trembling hope shall realise
Her full felicity.

Angels shall gather round me,
And joyous greetings give,
A sinner brought from sinful earth
With them to love and live.

But angels shall be silent,
While dearer spirits press
To mingle with my gushing joy
Their calmer happiness.

And meekly shall they bear me
Through that bright company,
Towards the brighter throne of Him
Who died to welcome me.

No further guidance needing,
Together shall we bend;
And bless the grace, that loving once,

Hath loved us to the end.

O meet me in the valley,

When heart and flesh shall fail,

And softly, safely lead me on,

Until within the veil.

And, Saviour, deal as kindly

With those I leave behind,

Till each shall, in our heavenly home,
As sweet a welcome find.
