DIALOGUE: THE COCK.

The scene of this Dialogue, though Lucian hath left us to find it out, is plainly laid at Athens, where the populace were once fo powerful. This will remove an obvious objection to his performance, namely, the improbability that a poor cobler fhould have acquired fuch a tolerable fmattering in History, Philofophy, Poetry, and Mythology. The answer is, that Micyllus was an Athenian. This remark hath not been made by any of Lucian's Commentators.

His defigu is, to banter the Pythagoreans and their philofophy. But that is not all. His fable hath a moral, and a very good one: It is intended to perfuade people in low ftations to be contented. with their lot, and not to fancy that the rich are much happier than they. It might be recommended, more particularly, to fuch of our clergy, as are

learned,

learned, ingenious, poor, and neglected. They lie under temptations to be envious, when they confider themselves, and their dignified brethren. If, then, any ecclefiaftical Micyllus fhould be taught by it, not to envy his neighbour Simon, Lucian will not have mifemployed his talent. "There are other and fublimer motives," you will fay: That is true; but every thing helps, that is good in its kind; and a Chriftian may fometimes receive moral instruction from an Epicurean.

In Lexiphanes, V. II. p. 324. He uses 'O.Cov. « Όιβος, fays Pollux, is 15 τραχήλε 13 βοὶς το κάλλι sov." Now 'Obos is Neck-Beef; and so, instead of κάλλισον, it fould perhaps be κάκισον

Here, as in many other places, Le Clerc falls into mistakes, because he did not understand metrical rules; for which he deserved to be blamed, fince he might have made himself a tolerable mafter of them with one month's application: but in truth, he had not an ear for poetical numbers. As he wrote many things, and in hafte, he hath often erred; but he compenfates thofe defects, by an abundance of excellent remarks; and is certainly one of the most useful writers of his age.

εἰ δέ μὴ, τ ̓ ἂνω κάτω

Ημῶν ὁ βίος λήσει μεταστρεφείς όλος.

Read μετατραφείς, οι μεταστρεφθείς.

Δυναται το πλέξειν καὶ φιλανθρώπως ποιειν.

"Strait

"Strait circumftances four the temper, and make men morofe; and they who are oppreffed with poverty, are often fubject to envy and to hate others, especially those who are fortunate and rich, This then is a diforder of the mind, which riches have a tendency to remove, and to cure."

I take this interpretation to be better than that which is given us by Le Clerc and by Salvini, Le Clerc tranflates,

Poffunt efficere divitiæ ut homines humani videantur.

It should rather be,

Poffunt divitia etiam humanos facere.

Τὸ μηδὲν ἀδικεῖν καὶ φιλανθρώπες ποιῖι.

This is not a verse: Perhaps,

και χρυσολαβες καλον παν

Εγχειρίδιον.

Δῖ τ' έχὶ σείεν αυτόν ἄλλα γε σποδίαν.

If you divide the verse thus,

Δεῖ τ' ε] χὶ σεί ] ειν αν ] τὸν ἀλ [ λα γε στο ] διεῖν.

where is the Tribrachus at the end, of which Bentley complains?

Bentley here obferves, that πάντα ἐστὶν ἱερὸν, omnia

funt Templum, is a folœcifm.

I cannot fee it.

Κριθὺς δ' ἐὰν σπείρω, πάνυ

Δικαίως ἀπέδων σ ̓ ἂν καταβάλω,

Perhaps,

Δίκαιος ἀποδέδωχ ̓ ὅσας ἂν καταβάλω.

'Anodidwye is reddit, or folet reddere.

"If I fow

barley, my honeft field returns me just as much as I had depofited.". He fays honeft ironically; for fuch bonefty is deceitfulness. Quinctilian alludes to thefe

lines, V. II. p. 1091.

"Quos ego exiftimo, fi quod in his finibus uberius invenerint folum, fertilioremve fegetem, negaturos Atticam effe, quod plus quam acceperit feminis reddat, quia hanc ejus terræ fidem Menander ludit." De Inft. Orat. Lib. VII. cap. x.
