HE following Effay was, for T the most part, drawn up above thirty Years ago, by an Univerfity-Tutor* for the private Ufe of his own Pupils: And fome Improvements were afterwards made to it by a judicious Friend. It was never intended for the publick View, because in the very Nature of it, it fhould be often changing, in fome Parts, according as new and better Books should come out. it might be thought affuming in a private Tutor to make his Directions publick, as if he affected to prescribe to other young Scholars, who might better be left to take Directions from their proper Tutors.

But fince this little Tract has, without the Author's Knowledge, and contrary to his Intentions, found a Way to the Prefs*, incorrect in many Things, and alter'd alfo in Method to its Difadvantage, it is thought proper to re-print it more correct, reftoring it to its first State; that it may appear as perfect now as ever it has been.

To this NEW EDITION are added fuch Books in the Sciences as have lately been publish'd, and are now in Ufe, without prefcribing however to the Tutors of the Univerfities, who are the propereft Judges.
