PICTORIAL EMBELLISHMENTS.

In order to increase the value and attraction of the Eclectic Magazine, arrangements have been made to develop a part of our plan, which will add greatly to the expense of the work; but we rely on a generous public, in our effort to make the Eclectic Magazine, as a Repository of Art, what it is as a work of Literature. We propose, in our monthly circulation, to supply to all parts of the country, the most beautiful specimens of Engravings that can be procured.

Friends of the work in the editorial corps and elsewhere, will oblige us by announcing-that each number will be embellished with an ENGRAVING ON STEEL, executed expressly for the Eclectic Magazine, in a style of finish not surpassed in this Country.

It is intended that this Series of Prints shall embrace the whole range of MODERN EUROPEAN ART, illustrating the different schools, and consist of a careful selection from subjects of a popular and interesting character, from the works of the most distinguished Painters. No pains or expense shall be spared to render this new feature of our periodical entirely satisfactory, and we trust a short time will suffice to establish the opinion that the insertion of a picture in the Eclectic Magazine will be a guaranty of its intrinsic merit. We feel at liberty to speak with great confidence on the subject, as we have engaged the assistance in this part of our editorship, of a gentleman who is abundantly capable of satisfying the expectations which this advertisement will create.

We have now in preparation for 1844, BEAUTIFUL PLATES, from the following English Painters: Lawrence, Danby, Chalon, Hilton, McClise, Wilkie, Eastlake, Turner, Martin, E. Landseer, Bonnington, Mulready, etc.

The AMERICAN ECLECTIC was in existence two years, and now comprises four 8vo volumes of over 600 pages each. Old or new subscribers for the ECLECTIC MAGAZINE, who would like to have the ECLECTIC from the beginning, will be supplied with the four vols., in Nos., at $5—and handsomely bound at $ 6,50. The most valuable articles of the British Quarterlies are contained in them, with a number of translations from German and French Journals, not elsewhere to be found in the English language.

COMMISSION FOR PROCURING NEW SUBSCRIBERS. With a view to the increase of our subscription-list, we offer to Postmasters and others who will interest themselves in forwarding new names and money to us, the following commissions: For each subscriber who pays in advance, when the number is less than five, $1.-Over five, and under one hundred, $2.-Over one and under two hundred, $2,25.Over two and under three hundred, $2,50.-Over three hundred, $3.

TO

OUR PATRONS, EDITORS, ETC.

ANOTHER YEAR.

THIS Number completes the year 1844, a year in which we have been obliged to contend against much opposition and many obstacles. But we are safely through, and in high spirits for renewing our enterprise for 1845, Deo volente.

We

Some of our subscribers seem willing that we should labor hard, day and night, for their profit and entertainment, without any return of the "needful" from them. suppose such may have been fearful of the issue, whilst there was rivalry on the field, and for that reason postponed payment. We confess that there seemed to be some apology for non-payment in advance, this year; but that apology can exist no longer. Every one may feel assured of the continuance of the Eclectic Magazine. And, although we shall excuse our non-paying friends for their delay in this case, if they will only "pony up" now, at the close of the year, yet we must say that we take the most pleasure in contemplating the names of those on our list, who are marked paid, and paid early. It really does us good, and gives a zest to our pursuits, to see the money coming in, as it should, at the beginning of the year.

This month and next, we do really hope to see all old scores wiped off, and none made for the future, as we think our subscribers will universally embrace our offer to take Five Dollars, paid POSITIVELY in advance, as directed in the " "TERMS."

TERMS.-Six Dollars a year; but if paid in ADVANCE, i. e., within the second month from the commencement of subscription, and at our own office, without expense to us, through private hands, or a post-master, FIVE Dollars will be received-otherwise Six, positively. Those from Mr. Campbell's list, who take the Eclectic Magazine now, will permit us to remind them that payment must be made immediately, in order to entitle them to receive it at Five Dollars.

GOOD NEWs.-Hereafter we shall uniformly wait for the arrival of the Steamers, and make up the entire Number with fresh matter. The selections from the Quarterlies must, of course, run on through two or three months; but all the rest of the matter will be from the latest arrivals, and the Magazine ready in ten days thereafter. So that we shall publish between the first and fifth of each month. In this way we shall have an advantage even over Weeklies," in getting out fresh matter.

friends.

To conclude: We are happy in the very anticipation of the future prompt payment of our patrons; and what, then, will the reality be, when we find every one sending up his Five Dollars, a sum so easily transmitted?

EDITOR AND PUBLISHERS.

SOMETHING NEW.

5. It surveys the field of German and French, as well as English Periodical Literature, and selects from all. 6. It is elevated and dignified in its character.

7. It contains, for Five Dollars in advance, all the best articles from the four Quarterlies, together with choice matter from the Magazines and Papers.

8. It is printed on fair paper, and in type that will not injure the eyes.

9. It commends itself to all persons of taste, and is represented by good judges, to be "the best period-
ical in the world."

10. The public ought to support a work of this description, in order to supplant the trash of the day.
TERMS. Six Dollars a year; but if paid in ADVANCE, i. e., within the second month, and at our own office,
without expense to us, through private hands, or through a Postmaster, Five Dollars will be received-other-
wise Six positively.

We now issue promptly, on the FIRST day of every month, waiting for the arrival of the steamers,
which leave Liverpool on the 4th of each month, and bring us our Magazines. Thus we shall always furnish
fresh matter, selecting for October 1st, from the September Magazines, and so on.
