1. O LORD! my best desire fulfill,
And help me to resign
Life, health, and comfort to thy will,
And make thy pleasure mine.

2. Why should I shrink at thy command,
Whose love forbids my fears!
Or tremble at the gracious hand
That wipes away my tears?
3. No! rather let me freely yield
What most I prize to thee,
Who never hast a good withheld,
Or wilt withhold from me.

4. Thy favor, all my journey through,
Thou art engaged to grant:
What else I want, or think I do,
"T is better still to want.

5. Wisdom and mercy guide my way,
Shall I resist them both;

A poor blind creature of a day,
And crushed before the moth?

6. But, ah! my inmost spirit cries,
Still bind me to thy sway;

Else the next cloud, that vails my skies,
Drives all these thoughts away.

The Dead who die in the Lord. [Hy. 480.
1. HEAR what the voice from heaven proclaims
For all the pious dead;
Sweet is the savor of their names,
And soft their sleeping bed.

2. They die in Jesus, and are blest;
How kind their slumbers are!
From sufferings and from sin released,
And freed from every snare.

3. Far from this world of toil and strife,
They're present with the Lord;
The labors of their mortal life
End in a large reward.

1. FATHER divine, thy piercing eye
Sees through the darkest night;
In deep retirement thou art nigh,
With heart-discerning sight.

2. There shall that piercing eye survey
My duteous homage paid,
With every morning's dawning ray,
And every evening's shade.

3. O may thine own celestial fire
The incense still inflame,

While my warm vows to thee aspire,
Through my Redeemer's name.

4. So shall the visits of thy love
My soul in secret bless;

So shalt thou deign, in worlds above,
Thy suppliant to confess.

Let God the Father and the Son, And Spirit be &- - dored,

Where there are works to make him known, Or saints to love the Lord.

484.

Lord's Day Morning.

8

[Ps. 5. i. 2. Let not thy face be hid from me,
Nor frown my soul away;
God of my life, I fly to thee,
In a distressing day.

1. LORD, in the morning thou shalt hear
My voice ascending high;
To thee will I direct my prayer,
To thee lift up mine eye.

2. Up to the hills where Christ is gone,
To plead for all his saints,
Presenting at his Father's throne
Our songs and our complaints.

3. Thou art a God, before whose sight
The wicked shall not stand;
Sinners shall ne'er be thy delight,
Nor dwell at thy right hand.

4. But to thy house will I resort,
To taste thy mercies there;
I will frequent thy holy court,
And worship in thy fear.

5. O may thy Spirit guide my feet
In ways of righteousness!
Make every path of duty straight,
And plain before my face.

[Hy. 43.

[blocks in formation]

3. "Tis not by works of righteousness,
Which our own hands have done;
But we are saved by sovereign grace,
Abounding through his Son.

4. "T is from the mercy of our God
That all our hopes begin;
"Tis by the water and the blood

Our souls are washed from sin.

5. "Tis through the purchase of his death, Who hung upon the tree,

The Spirit is sent down to breathe
On such dry bones as we.

6. Raised from the dead, we live anew; And justified by grace,

We shall appear in glory too,

And see our Father's face.

489. Remembrance of happier Days. [Hy. 413.

1. SWEET was the time when first I felt
The Saviour's pardoning blood
Applied to cleanse my soul from guilt,
And bring me home to God.

2. Soon as the morn the light revealed,
His praises tuned my tongue;
And, when the evening shades prevailed,
His love was all my song.

3. In prayer my soul drew near the Lord,
And saw his glory shine;

And, when I read his holy word,

I called each promise mine.

4. Now, when the evening shade prevails,
My soul in darkness mourns;

And, when the morn the light reveals,
No light to me returns.

5. My prayers are now an empty noise,"
For Jesus hides his face;

I read; the promise meets my eyes,
But will not reach my case.

6. The tempter threatens to prevail,
And make my soul his prey;
Yet, Lord, thy mercies cannot fail;
O come without delay.

The iron fetters yield.

4. He comes, from thickest films of vice
To clear the mental ray;
And, on the eyes oppressed with night,
To pour celestial day.

5. He comes, the broken heart to bind,

The bleeding soul to cure;
And, with the treasures of his grace,
T'enrich the humble poor.

6. Our glad hosanna, Prince of peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And heaven's eternal arches ring
With thy belovéd name.

With an unwavering tongue.

The city where we dwell,
The walls, of strong salvation made,
Defy th' assaults of hell.

The statutes of our King.

And ventured on his grace.

And banish all your fears: Strength in the Lord Jehovah dwells, Eternal as his years.
