THE ANT.

OOK in the Book of Proverbs and you will see that the ant

is referred to as an example of diligence, and also as a worker that knows the right time to perform the tasks necessary for its life and the bringing up of its young. In a great many books, borrowing what was supposed to be the idea of Scripture, the ant has been written about as an insect that laid up in summer a store upon which it could feed in winter, when provision was scarce, or not to be obtained at all.

Though it is quite true that the ants of some kinds do collect in the fine weather stores that they may use in the wet and cold seasons, yet it is very probable that all Solomon meant to say was this,that the ant made proper use of the summer of its opportunities and obtained what it required at the best time. Like many other insects, most ants are asleep, or very sluggish, through the winter. Remarkable is another reference in the Proverbs to the ant, forming one in the list of creatures that are small, but "exceeding wise." I must say I
