For, besides that this book is bulky, it was promised years ago. In respect to its size, I have nothing to plead in justification but the variety and extent of the subjects which a general view of insanity properly embraces. I might offer many common-place reasons for the delay; and one has certainly occurred, which not only deprived me of the means of proceeding, but almost induced me wholly to relinquish my intention:-a thief stole my porte-feuille, containing all my memoranda, extracts, remarks, &c., and thus divested me in a moment of the labour of years.
