PREFACE.

IF in the following Poem should be found a stimulus (however slight) to the dormant energies of some who may have unhappily been led astray by the innovations of "a philosophy falsely so called," the Author will feel himself amply rewarded.

"Dura tamen molli saxa cavantur aquâ.”—OVID.

Where there is historic paucity, there is room for artificial contribution; and it is humbly hoped that the names which imagination has, in this little work, associated with those of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japhet, may not be thought more harsh than Hebraistic, or more utopian than euphonious.-There is a music in all names and in all words, but to enjoy such music, it may oft-times be necessary that we dismiss certain correlatives, which custom only has made familiar.
