On the contrary, where there is a via tious Inclination and an Affection to Wickedness; there mens minds are not only blinded by the natural consequence of such a disposition, but God moreover withdraws his Spirit from them, and the Holy Ghost will not dwell in a Heart that takes pleasure in Unrighteousness. For into a malicious Soul Wisdom fall not enter, nor dwell in the Body that is subject unto Sin; For the Holy Spirit of Discipline, will flee deceit, and remove from Thoughts that are without Understanding, and will not abide when Unrighteousness cometh in, Wisd. i. 4. Nay, not only so; but, where men are obstinately incorrigible, God is represented in Scripture as justly giving them up in judgment to be deceived by the Evil One, that for a deserved punishment they may increase unto more Ungodliness, Rev. xx. 8, Satan is described as being let loose, that he may go out to deceive the Nations: And the destruction of Wicked

And the Lord said, Wło skall perswade, (in the original it is, who skall deceive) Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-Gilead? and one faid on this manner, and another faid on that manner. And there came forth a Spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said, I will perswade him ; And the Lord said, unto him, Wherewith ? And be faid, I will go forth, and be a lying Spirit in the mouth of all his Prophets; And be faid, Thou shalt perfwade bim and prevail alyo; Go forth, and do so. The Representation is highly figurative, and by no means to be understood literally; But the meaning is, that God justly permits Wicked men, when they obstinately refuse to hear Him, he permits them to be deceived by the Evil One to their own destruction. The like expression is ufed,

Fudg. ix. 23. God sent an Evil Spirit between Abimelech' and the men of Shechem : The meaning is, as it is explained in the following words, God permitted Abimelech to be deceived and dealt treacberously
