THE following difcourfes were prepared for the pulpit during the fummer of 1804, with little expectation of being afterwards offered from the prefs. The author, fince that time, has been frequently called to itinerate through the frontier fettlements, and, in thefe occafional vifits, was conftrained fincerely to deplore their defolate condition. Many of them are deftitute of gospel ordidinances regularly dispensed on the fabbath, neither are they furnished with practical books for their inftruction and edification through the week. From this acquaintance with their defolate fituation in a spiritual fenfe he has been led frequently and anxiously to enquire what means might be adopted for miniftering to their relief. Willingly he would impart fome fpiritual gift, to the end they might be established and finally faved. Such were the motives by which he was induced to venture the publication of the following difcourfes. The fubjects, however imperfeâly difcuffed, are without doubt infinitely interefting; and the plan he humbly hopes, is calculated in fome measure for the edification of the frontier inhabitants. There is an attempt to exhibit the great do&rines of chriftianity in their connection with each other, which renders the work fuitable for those who enjoy not the means of fyftematic inftruction.
