city and strength.

THE GROVER & BAKER MACHINE

Is the Double Lock Stitch which forms a seam which will not rip even if every fourth stitch is cut.
It is the only stitch that survives the washing-tub on bias seams.

From the New York Christian Advocate and

Journal.

"We speak from experience when we say, that after having tried all the principal sewing machines, we must accord to that of Grover & Baker, the pre-eminence. Those indispensable features of sewing, strength, uniformity and elasticity, all of which are brought out in this incomparable invention, make it the first sewing machine in the country. Others have their good points, but this combines all, and possesses every characteristic necessary to make it most desirable. We know one lady whose appreciation of this machine, after a trial of years, is such that she would part with almost every other article of household furniture before she would allow it to be taken. She understands the different varieties of sewing machines, and has tested the merits of all; but Grover & Baker's noiseless machine, with its firm, uniform stitch, surpasses, in her estimation, all others. In that lady's opinion we have the most unlimited confidence, her taste and judgment being excelled by none. Nor has her judgment been formed hastily. She has, with a view of thoroughly testing the merits of the different sewing machines, given the most of them a fair trial, and

the result is as above stated."

as well as of the work they turn out, we are satisfied that the Grover & Baker Sewing Machine is the best one in market for family use. It is the simplest, the least liable to get out of repair, and the easiest to understand and learn how to manage.

"Indeed, the Grover & Baker Sewing Machine is the only one that finishes its work, leaving no necessity for fastening the ends of the threads, and forming a seam that may be cut anywhere without fear of its unraveling. Further, the machine is at least as fine a piece of furniture as any of the others, and is the only one that does not make a disagreeable noise-the sound of this machine being scarcely audible across a large room. The Grover & Baker Family Sewing Machine is adapted to the manufacture of every garment ordinarily used in a family; and for domestic use, we do not hesitate to recommend it above all other machines."

From the N. Y. Daily News.
"The Grover & Baker stitch is the firm and
lasting knot; the shuttle-stich, as made by the
Wheeler and Wilson Machine, is the series of
loops with a straight thread running through
them. Grover & Baker's Machines work, in
their peculiar stitch, and fabrics put together
by it may wear out and drop to pieces from
original weakness or hard usage, but come apart
or give way at the seams they can not; they
will hold together when the cloth or calico
around them hangs in rags and tatters."
Send for a Circular or call and examine.

From the N. Y. Leader.
"THE GROVER & BAKER SEWING MACHINE.-
From a thorough trial of this machine, and a
careful examination of all the other machines,
