Publishers garden of the Middle Temple on July Action against American Among the American works to be Plant Physiology, with Special Reference to Plant Production," by Dr. B. M. Duggar, Professor of Plant Physiology in the New York State College of Agriculture. contains 'How Men Fly." This has been written by Miss Gertrude M. Bacon, daughter of that well-known aeronaut the late Rev. J. M. Bacon. Miss Bacon was the first Englishwoman to fly in a heavier-than-air machine, and the first woman to go up in an airship. The book will be published on the 13th inst. by the house of Cassell at one shilling. A boy scout the other day was asked what was the use of belonging to the corps. His reply came pat enough. You see, it keeps chaps from loafing." In Mr. F. J. Cross's new work, " Character and Empire Building," just published by the house of Cassell, the inventor (or is it the" creator"?) of the movement, Sir R. Baden-Powell, provides a statement of the aims of the admirable boy scouts' organisation which is dealt with, as well as those other societies which aim at giving youth an idea of public service. Mr. Methuen has written a short book on the reform of the Peers. It is entitled "A Simple Plan for a New House of Lords," and is published at 2d. by Messrs. Methuen. It will be remembered that Mr Methuen's pamphlets on the Boer war and the fiscal controversy were very successful. In commemoration of the centenary of the birth of Thackeray, a garden party will be given, with the kind permission, of the Master, Treasurer and Benchers of the Middle Temple, by Lady Ritchie and the Editor of the Cornhill Magazine (Mr. Reginald J. Smith, K.C.) in the a Frederick James Furnivall: Harraden, Anthony Hope, Among the books which Messrs. Longmans will publish early in the autumn is a work called The Position of Women in Indian Life." Over the signature of any Hindu lady such a book would have commanded public attention, but as it emanates with all the prestige attached to the name of Her Highness the Maharani of Baroda, the British Press may feel justified in looking forward to this unique publication with special interest. (From The Times Correspondent.) NEW YORK, JUNE 27. THE Federal Government began a suit to-day against the "Periodical Clearinghouse and twenty publishing firms constituting the so-called Magazine Trust. McClures, the Review of Reviews, DoubleAmong the defendants are Harpers, day Page & Co., Buttericks, and other The leading publishers of periodicals. Government charges them with being engaged in an unlawful conspiracy and a combination to restrain trade and commerce, to destroy and prevent competition, to coerce subscription agents, and to fix, arbitrarily, prices at which publications may be sold by agents. An injunction against the continuation of these practices and a dissolution of the Trust are asked. Interest in the case is increased by the fact that these magazine publishers recently conducted an elaborate and costly campaign against the Government's Post Office policy. Tolstoi's Posthumous Publications Simultaneous Issue in most European Ir may be recalled that after the death of Count Leo Tolstoi a lawsuit was instituted by the widow and the daughter against the trustees, in whose charge all his unpublished MSS. had been left. It has now been decided by the courts that the well-known Berlin publishing firm of Ladysehnikow is to deal with the matter. There are twenty-six MSS., three of which are dramatic works. The first volume, which will be published on November 20th, the anniversary of the poet's death, in nearly all the European languages simultaneously, will contain a comedy, The Living Corpse," which is shortly to be produced at the Artists' Theatre in Moscow, and the German stage rights of which have been acquired by Professor Max Reinhardt, of Berlin, Germany's leading metteur-enscène; also several short stories and three complete novels, entitled respectively: The Devil," After the Ball," and "What I Saw in Dreams." " The second volume, to be issued on December 15th, will contain the following stories: "Pater Sergius," The Light that Shines in the Dark,' The Young Dr. Percy C. Buck, Professor of Tsar," and a series of sketches. The third Music in the University of Dublin, has volume, announced for January 18th, written, with the title will 1912, Unfigured be composed of Hadji Harmony," a short treatise on modulaMurat," "A Madman's Diary," Mother," tion, harmonisation of melodies, unTwo Human Beings," and "Fedor figured basses, inner melodies, canons and Kusmitoch's Diary,' the last-named ground basses. The volume is about to dealing with the personality and history be published by the Oxford University of the Tsar Alexander I. Press. Manchester Booksellers' Association THE Manchester and District Booksellers' and Stationers' Association held its Second Annual Picnic on Saturday, July 1st. Ninety-four members and friends made the journey to Castleton, an increase of twenty upon the attendance last year. Owing to the press of traffic there was a little delay in starting from Manchester, but Hope Station was reached in time to allow those desirous of walking to Castleton, some of the party driving, as arranged. There was only a little interval before tea, but a number visited the famous Peak Cavern, while others made their way to the foot of Peveril Castle, the steep ascent not being inviting on such a warm afternoon. As most people are aware, Scott's "Peveril of the Peak" enshrines the Castle in an imperishable atmosphere of romance, literally so. It dates, however, from the time of William the Conqueror, and that's good enough for our American cousins! Time did not permit of a visit to the Winnats, as many desired. This pass is a ravine flanked by steep green slopes, overhung in many places by masses of limestone rock. The name is a corruption of Wind Gates, and as Baddeley says, "with a strong sou'-wester blowing it is often as difficult to crawl up the pass as it is to avoid flying down.' The Peak District has provided local colour for many works of fiction; but Joseph Hatton's "Banishment of Jessop Blythe" may be noted among the best, and of course Mrs. H. Ward's David Grieve.' After tea the members were photographed by Mr. S. L. Coulthurst, who is better in health than at the beginning of the year, and is hoping that a lengthened holiday will re-establish all the old vim. Aviation "THE New Art of Flying," by Waldemar Kæmpffert, will be published immediately by Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, Ltd. In this work the principles of aviation are carefully set forth with a view to the present requirements of airmen, and to the future benefit of the new science of the air. Interwoven with the simple explanations of the principles of flying is much historical information that will be found of great interest and value. Cricket in the Trade Burns & Oates v. Horsburgh, on the occasion of his retiring from the management of Whitcombe & Tombs, Ltd. Mr. Horsburgh has held this position for the past twelve years. Advantage was taken by the managing director, Mr. G. H. Whitcombe, to present Mr. Horsburgh with a handsome piece of plate, as a mark of the esteem in which he was held by the directors of the company. A very pleasant evening was spent, and those present were generally sorry when the time arrived to break up. Abbott (S. S.) The Bee-keeper's companion. June 11 Contents of Number for July 8, 1911.
