He should not have called it Tartary, which makes a ridiculous ambiguity; for Tartary may be Tartaria, as well as Tartarus, and indeed better.

In th' Hellefpont being nigh drowned all.

This tranflation is wide of the text, and the text is corrupted. See Scaliger, 336. The Greeks fuffered nothing in the Hellefpont.

Here follows the conjecture of a friend of mine: "Inftead of Spartica myrtus, perhaps it should be Bacchica, or Bacchia; for the myrtus was facred to Bacchus, as may be seen in Athenæus, XV. The Comiffatores had crowns of it. Thus Hercules, in the Alceftis of Euripides, afperfus flore Liberi patris :"

Στέφει δὲ κρᾶτα μυρσίνης κλάδοις,

*Αμεσ ̓ ὑλακιῶν.
