The morning came on which the man was to be executed. He was brought out sitting in his coffin in a cart, and drawn to the place where he was to be executed. A grave was dug. They took the coffin out of the cart, placed the young man upon it, took the black cap, and were just pulling it down over his face. The Spanish soldiers awaited the order to fire. But just then the American and English Consuls rode up. The English Consul sprang out of the carriage and took the union jack, the British flag, and wrapped it around that man, and the American Consul wrapped around him the starspangled banner; and then turning to the Spanish officers they said: "Fire upon those flags, if you dare." They did not dare to fire upon the flags. governments behind those flags.

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

UR subject at this time is "THE WORK OF THE
HOLY SPIRIT." Before taking up the subject, how-

ever, let me call your attention to this fact-that the Holy Spirit is a PERSON. I was a Christian a long time before I made that discovery. I thought that the Holy Spirit was an attribute of God, like mercy, or goodness-an influence going out from God. But as I got a little better acquainted with my Bible, I found that He was a PERSON as much as the Father and the Son. And you notice that when Christ speaks of the Spirit, He always speaks of Him as HE or HIM; and if He were an influence, Christ would not refer to Him as 66 He" or "Him."

In John xiv. 17, we read, "Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him; but ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." There are many other passages, but I call your attention to that one. And whenever Christ spoke of the Holy Spirit, it was in that way-HE, HIM.

In Romans v. 5 you find that

HE COMES TO IMPART LOVE.

That is one thing the Spirit of God must do. His first work when He dwells in a soul is to impart love. The Holy Ghost sheds abroad in the heart the love of God. That is His work. This is the true sign that persons have been born of God; they will love. If a person professes to be a child of God, and lacks love, you may know that his The first impulse of a young convert will be to love. Not only to love that which is pure and lovely, and to love those who love him—the greatest Hottentot in the world will love that which he thinks lovely, and those who love him; but to love the unlovely, and those who do not love him. For us to love the unloveable

profession is not real or true.

and to pray for our enemies and them that persecute and hate us, as Jesus Christ prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do," we must have a different spirit from what men have by nature. We get that by being born of God. When the Holy Spirit dwells with us, we shall then begin to love. The office of the Spirit is to impart love.

sums up the nine graces or out this one fact-that love "But the fruit of the Spirit

In Galatians v., where Paul fruits of the Spirit, he brings stands at the head of the nine. is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance." Now, if these graces are springing up in our hearts, and growing there, it is a sign that we have been born of the Spirit, and born from above. They do not grow in the soil of the natural heart. The natural man is at war with God; "he is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." It is out of the question to make the natural man serve God; but when a man becomes a partaker of the Divine nature, then these graces will grow. You may sum up the whole nine in the one word, LOVE. Joy is love exulting; Peace is love in repose; Longsuffering is love untiring; Gentleness is love in society; Goodness is love in action; Faith is love on the battlefield; Meekness is love at school; Temperance is love in training. So that you can put the whole nine in one word—Love.

We read in Romans viii., that wonderful chapter, "If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His." We can soon put the test to ourselves, whether we are His or not. If I have the Spirit of Christ, I belong to Him. If I have not, I am not His. I may belong to this or some other church; I may be a communicant in good standing in the sight of the world; I may go through all the ordinances, and partake of the Lord's Supper-and yet be a stranger to the grace of God. If I have not the Spirit of Christ, I am none of His. That is the test. Have we got love? Has the Holy Spirit shed abroad love in our hearts? A great many of you-if you will let your minds go back to the hour when you were first converted-will remember that then a great
