Except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved; but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.-Mark xiii. 20.

Thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John: he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, &c. He shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.—Luke i. 13. 15.

Many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, &c. when great famine was throughout all the land; but unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, &c. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. -Luke iv. 25-27.

Christ called Zacchaeus to come down, &c. and he received him joyfully: and Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house: forsomuch as he also is the son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and save that which was lost.-Luke xix. 5, 6. 8-10.

All that the Father giveth me, shall come to me: and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out, &c. This is the Father's will, &c. that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, &c. There are some of you that believe not, &c. No man can come unto me, except it were given him of my Father.-John vi. 37. 39. 64, 65.

Jesus called the blind man, whom he had healed, and discovered himself to him.-John ix.. 35-39.

Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold, &c. Ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, &c.

My sheep hear my voice.-John x. 16. 26, 27.

They believed not on him, that the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, &c. Lord, who hath believed? &c. Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, &c.-John xii. 37-—41.

I speak not of you all, I know whom I have chosen. John xiii. 18.

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, &c. I have chosen you out of the world, &c.-John xv. 16. 19.

That he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him, &c. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me, &c. I pray not, &c. but for them which thou gavest me out of the world.-John xvii. 2. 6. 9.

The promise is made to you and your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call, &c. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.-Acts ii. 39. 47.

Philip sent on purpose to meet the Eunuch, and commanded to go near his chariot, where he preached unto him, and converted him.—Acts viii. 26 -29. 36, 37.

Paul was persecuting the Church, &c. and was converted in the midst of his rage, &c. And Christ said to Ananias, Go thy way, for he is a chosen vessel to bear my name before the Gentiles, &c. And I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name.-Acts ix. 1-6. 15, 16. xxii. 14.

God in a special manner calls Cornelius to the faith.-Acts. x. 1, 2, &c.

Which extraordinary call, Peter afterwards declares at large to those of the circumcision.-Acts xi. 2, &c.

We know that all things shall work together for good to them that love God; to them who are the called according to his purpose: for whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, &c. Whom he did predestinate, them he also called; whom he called, them he justified, &c. them he also glorified. Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? Rom. viii. 28-30. 33.

God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew, &c. I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. Even so then at this present time also, there is a remnant according to the election of grace: if by grace, then it is no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace, &c. The election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded (or hardened) as it is written, &c. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance. As ye in the times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy, &c. O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! for who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been his counsellor, &c. For of him, and through him, and to him are all things.-Rom. xi. 2. 4-8. 29, 30. 33, 34. 36. 1 Kings xix. 18.

Work out your own salvation, &c. for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Phil. ii. 12, 13.

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Col. i. 12, 13.

Knowing, &c. your election of God: for our gospel came not unto you in word, but also in power, &c.-1 Thess. i. 4, 5. 1 Cor. i. 18. 24.

God hath not appointed us to wrath: but to obtain salvation by our Lord. -1 Thess. v. 9.

God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, &c. Whereunto he called you by our gospel.-2 Thess. ii. 13, 14.

There shall in no wise enter into

In general.

OF

It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.-Lev. xvii. 11.

The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. -John i. 17.

Surely his salvation is nigh, &c. mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other.-Ps. lxxxv. 9, 10.

In thy sight shall no man living justified. Ps. cxliii. 2.

grace, &c. O the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom, &c.-Rom, xi, 6.33.

Christ is become of no effect unto

you; whosoever of you are justified
Gal. v. 4.
by the law, ye are fallen from grace.

By grace ye are saved, &c. not of works, lest any man should boast.Eph. ii. 5. 8,9. i. 2, &c. 2 Thess. ii. 16.

We are the circumcision which worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ, and have no confidence in the flesh. Phil. iii. 3.

Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And that they may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.-2 Tim. ii. 1.10.

The grace of God that bringeth salvation, hath appeared to all men. be-Titus ii. 11.

Jesus spake a parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous (the Pharisee and the Publican): the Publican standing afar off, &c. saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you (said Christ) this man went down to his house rather justified than the other. -Luke xviii. 9-14.

They were pricked in their heart, and said, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said, Repent, and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Christ, for the remission of sins. Acts ii. 37, 38.

The keeper of the prison, said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? and they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts xvi. 27. 30-32.

They, being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God; for Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.-Rom. x. 1-4.

If by grace, then is it no more of works, otherwise grace is no more

After that the kindness and love of God our Saviour towards man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he hath saved us, &c.— Titus iii. 4, 5.

Ye are come to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.-Heb. xii. 22. 24.

Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines: for it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace, not with meats, which have not profited.-Heb. xiii. 8, 9.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, according to his abundant mercy, hath begotten us again to a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, &c. of which salvation the prophets have inquired, &c. who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you. Searching, &c, what the Spirit of Christ which was in them, did signify, when it testified the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow.-1 Pet. i. 3. 10, 11.

Thou art worthy, &c. for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred,

and tongue, and people, and nation. -Rev. v. 9.

SECT. 1. In Particular.

Pardon of Sins.

THE Lord proclaimed himself, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, &c. forgiving iniquity, and transgression, and sin.Exod. xxxiv. 6, 7. Numb. xiv. 17-19. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered: blessed is the man, unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.-Ps. xxxii. 1, 2. 5. Rom. iv. 7, 8.

As for our transgressions, thou shalt purge them away. Ps. Ixv. 3. Thou wast a God that forgavest them: thou tookest vengeance on their inventions.-Ps. xcix. 8.

But there is forgiveness with thee that thou mayest be feared.-Ps. cxxx. 4.

Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow: though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.-Isa. i. 18.

I am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.-Isa. xliii. 25. I have blotted out as a thick cloud thy transgressions, and as a cloud thy sins. Sing, O heavens, for the Lord hath done it.-Isa. xliv. 22, 23.

I will cleanse them from all their iniquity whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.-Jer. xxxiii. 8.

In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found; for I will pardon them whom I reserve.--Jer. 1. 20. Isa. xxxiii. 24.

Seventy weeks are determined, &c. to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, &c. The Messiah shall be cut off, but not for himself, &c.-Dan. ix. 24. 26.

Who is a God like unto thee? that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? &c. Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Micah vii. 18, 19.

In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.-Zech.xiii. 1.

Thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.-Matt. i. 21.

Jesus said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee, &c. Ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins.-Matt. ix. 2. 6.

All manner of sin and blasphemy He was wounded for our transgres- shall be forgiven to men, but the sions; he was bruised for our iniqui- blasphemy against the Holy Ghost ties, &c. The Lord hath laid on him shall not be forgiven unto men. And the iniquity of us all, &c. He shall whosoever speaketh a word against bear their iniquities.-Isa. liii. 5, 6.11. the Son of man, it shall be forgiven Let him return unto the Lord, and him; but whosoever speaketh against he will have mercy upon him; and the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forunto our God; for he will abundantly given him, neither in this world, neipardon (or multiply pardons); for my ther in the world to come.-Matt. thoughts are not as your thoughts, &c. xii. 31, 32. -Isa. lv. 7-9. Ezek. xxxiii. 14—16. I will make a new covenant, &c. for I will forgive their iniquity, and will remember their sin no more.Jer. xxxi. 31. 34. Heb. x. 17, 18.

This is my blood, &c. which is shed for many for the remission of sins.— Matt. xxvi. 28.

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people, by the remission of
