That the trial of your faith, &c. might be found unto praise, and honour, and glory, at the appearing of Jesus Christ, &c. The Father, who, without respect of persons, judgeth according unto every man's

Abide in him; that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.-1 John ii. 28.

That we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as he is,

so are we. 1 John iv. 17.

works.1 Pet.i.7.13.17. Ps.lxii. 12. Who shall give account to him The angels, which kept not their that is ready to judge the quick and first estate, he hath reserved in everthe dead? &c. The end of all things lasting chains, under darkness, unto is at hand: be ye therefore sober, the judgment of the great day, &c. and watch unto prayer, &c. The Behold, the Lord cometh with ten time is come that judgment must thousands of his saints, to execute begin at the house of God: and if it judgment upon all, &c.-Jude 6. 14, 15. begin first at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?-1 Pet. iv. 5. 7.17, 18.

When the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory.-1 Pet. v. 4.

If God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down, &c. to be reserved unto judgment, &c. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment, to be punished.-2 Pet. ii. 4. 9.

There shall come in the last day, scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning, &c. The heavens and the earth, which are now by the same word, are kept in store, reserved unto fire, against the day of judgment, and perdition of ungodly men, &c. One day is with the Lord as a thousand years; and a thousand years as one day, &c. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, &c. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be? &c. Looking for and hastening unto the coming of the day of God.-2 Pet. iii. 3,4. 7,8. 10-12. Ps. cii. 25, 26.

Behold, he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see him; and they also which pierced him, &c.— Rev. i. 7.

I will give to every one of you according to your works.-Rev. ii. 23.

And the heavens departed as a scroll, &c. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and mighty men, &c. hid themselves in the dens, and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?-Rev. vi. 14-17. Mark xiii. 31.

The nations were angry; and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead that they should be judged; and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets.Rev. xi. 18. xiv. 7.

I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it; from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, &c. and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened, &c. and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.--Rev. xx. 11, 12. 15.

Behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me to give every man according as his work shall be, &c. and the Spirit and the Bride say,

Come, &c. He which testified these
things, saith, Surely, I come quickly.
Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

We are sure that the judgment of
God is according to truth, against
them which commit such things.-
Rom. ii. 2.

Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven; where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.-Matt. vi. 20.

Many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, &c. in the kingdom of Be not deceived, God is not heaven.-Matt. viii. 11. Luke xvi. mocked; for whatsoever a man sow- 22. 25. eth, that shall he also reap: for he that soweth to his flesh, shall of the flesh reap corruption, &c.-Gal. vi. 7,8.

CHAP. XXXV.

OF THE GLORY PREPARED AND RE-
SERVED FOR BELIEVERS, AT THE
APPEARING OF THE LORD JESUS
CHRIST.

MEN have not heard nor perceived
by the ear, &c. what he hath pre-
pared for him that waiteth for him.
-Isa. Ixiv. 4. 1 Cor. ii. 9, 10.
Verily there is a reward for the
righteous. Ps. lviii. 11.

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.-1 Cor. xv. 19. 1 Tim. iv. 8.

Though after my skin, worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh (or out of my flesh) shall I see God: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another.-Job xix. 26, 27.

In thy presence is fulness of joy: at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.-Ps. xvi. 11. xvii. 15. Death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning.-Ps. xlix. 14.

Many of them who sleep in the dust of the earth, shall awake: some to everlasting life, some to shame, &c. and they that be wise (or teachers) shall shine as the brightness of the firmament: and they that turn many to righteousness, as the stars, for ever and ever.-Dan. xii. 2, 3.

Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.-Matt. v. 8.

Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun, in the kingdom of their Father.-Matt. xiii. 43.

Jesus was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.Matt. xvii. 2, 3.

In the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels of God in heaven. Matt. xxii. 30.

Then shall the King say, &c. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you, &c. The righteous into life eternal. -Matt. xxv. 34.46.

Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you" the kingdom.-Luke xii. 32. James ii. 5.

Thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.-Luke xiv. 14.

And the resurrection, &c. Neither can they die any more; for they are equal unto the angels, and are the children of God.-Luke xx. 36. John v. 29. Isa. xxv. 8.

Lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh.-Luke xxi. 28. I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed to me; that ye may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.-Luke xxii. 29, 30.

To-day shalt thou be with me in Paradise.-Luke xxiii. 43.

I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish.-John x. 28. Rom. ii. 7.

Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.-John xiii. 36.

In my Father's house are many

mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you: I go to prepare a place for you, &c. I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.John xiv. 2, 3. 19. xii. 26.

I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice: and your joy no man taketh from you.-John xvi. 22. The glory which thou gavest me, I have given them, &c. Father, I will that they also whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me.-John xvii.

Glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good.-Rom. ii.

7. 10.

We stand and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.-Rom. v. 2.

The end, everlasting life: for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.-Rom. vi. 22, 23. Gal. vi. 8. 2 Tim. i. 10.

Heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together: for I reckon that the sufferings of this present time, are not worthy to be compareth with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God, &c. We ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body, &c. Whom he justified, them he also glorified.-Rom. viii. 17-19. 23. 30. Heb. i. 14. ii. 10. They do it to obtain a corruptible crown: but we, an incorruptible. 1 Cor. ix. 25.

We know in part, and we prophesy in part: but when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away, &c. Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know, even as also I am known.-1 Cor. xiii. 9,

As we have borne the image of the earthly, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly, &c. The dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption: and this mortal must put on immortality, &c.-1 Cor. xv. 49. 52-56. 2 Cor. v. 4.

Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, &c. The things which are not seen, are eternal.-2 Cor. iv. 17, 18. Matt. v. 11, 12.

We have a building of God; an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.-2 Cor. v. 1.

Jesus Christ, who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body.-Phil. iii. 20, 21.

For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven.-Col. i. 5.

When Christ, who is our life,

shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.-Col. iii. 4.

Then we which are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.-1 Thess. iv. 17, 18.

To you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed, &c. when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe. 2 Thess. i. 7. 10.

He called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. - -2 Thess. ii. 14.

That they may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory--2 Tim. ii. 10.

There is laid up for me a crown of righteousness; which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and mot to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

-2 Tim. iv. 8.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.-Heb. iv. 9.

Ye took joyfully the spoiling of your goods; knowing in yourselves, that ye have in heaven a better, and an enduring substance: cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward.-Heb. x. 34, 35. Prov. viii. 21.

Abraham looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God, &c. They desire a better country, that is, an heavenly wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city, &c. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Heb. xi. 10. 16. 35.

Ye are come unto Mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem; and to an innumerable company of angels; to the general assembly, &c. and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect: and to Jesus, the Mediator of the new covenant. Heb. xii. 22--24.

Blessed be God, &c. which hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, &c. to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, &c. The sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow, &c. Hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you, at the revelation of Jesus Christ.-1 Pet. i. 3, 4. 11. 13. v. 10.

Ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.-1 Pet. iii. 9.

When the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory, which fadeth not away, &c. The God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory, by Christ Jesus, &c.-1 Pet. v. 4. 10.

We, according to his promise, look for new heavens, and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.2 Pet. iii. 13.

He that doeth the will of God, abideth for ever.-1 John ii. 17.

We know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.—1 John iii. 2.

They shall walk with me in white, &c. clothed in white raiment, &c. will I make a pillar in the temple of my God: and he shall go no more out, &c. will I grant to sit with me, in my throne; even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father.-Rev. iii. 4, 5. 12. 21. ii. 26-28.

I beheld, and lo, a great multitude, &c. stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands, &c. These are they which came out of great tribulation; and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb; therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple : and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, nor thirst no more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat; for the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne, shall feed them, &c. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. -Rev. vii. 9. 13-18. Isa. xxv. 8.

The souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and which had not worshipped the beast, &c. nor received his mark upon their foreheads.-Rev. xx. 4.

The New Jerusalem's glory described at large, &c. Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them, &c. and wipe away all tears from their eyes. And there shall be no more death; neither sorrow, nor crying; neither, shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.Rev. xxi. 1-5. xxii. 1–6. 2 Pet. iii. 13.

CHAP. XXXVI.

OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTAND

ING IN DIVINE THINGS, AND THE

WANT THEREOF: IGNORANCE
ABOUT SUCH THINGS, AND THE

EVIL THEREOF.

WHEN Abimelech had taken Sarah, Abraham's wife, though in the integrity of his heart, not knowing her to be Abraham's wife, because he had said, she was his sister: yet God said unto him, Behold thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife. -Gen. xx. 2-10.

Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey him?-Exod. v. 2. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch forth my hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.-Exod. vii. 5. Ezek. vi. 7. 10. 13. Exod. xiv. 4. 8.

According to thy word, that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the Lord our God.-Exod. viii. 10.

I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs, &c. that ye may know how that I am the Lord. Exod. x. 1, 2. Deut. iv. 35. Exod. vi. 7.

Jethro said (when Moses had told him what God had done), Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods; for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly, he was above them.-Exod. xviii. 11. 2 Kings v. 15.

Under the law, they were to offer sacrifices for sins of ignorance, whether of a person, or of the congregation.-Levit. iv. 2-4. 13-15. v. 1-6. 17-19. Numb. xv. 24-26.

Ye have seen all that the Lord did, &c. Yet the Lord hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. -Deut. xxix. 2. 4.

They sacrificed to devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not; to new gods.-Deut. xxxii. 17.

There arose another generation

after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.-Judges ii. 10.

Samson said unto his father, Get her for me, for she pleaseth me well; but his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines.-Judges xiv. 3, 4.

The sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord.-1 Sam. ii. 12.

Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.—1 Sam. iii. 7.

That all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, &c. and that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear, &c.-1 Sam. xvii. 46, 47.

Elijah prays that God will (by an extraordinary means) let it be known this day, that thou art God in Israel, &c. That this people may know that thou art the Lord God.-1 Kings xviii. 36-38.

Because the Syrians have said, The Lord is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys: therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.-1 Kings xx. 28.

Solomon asked wisdom and knowledge, and God gave it; and riches also.-2 Chron. i. 9—12.

Nevertheless, they shall be his servants: that they may know my service, and the service of the king doms of the countries.-2 Chron. xii. 8.

God left Hezekiah, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.-2 Chron. xxxii. 31.

Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? &c.-Job xi. 7, 8. 12. xxxvii. 5. Eccles. xi. 5.

I have understanding as well as you: I am not inferior to you.-Job xii. 3. xiii. 2.

Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him!-Job xxvi. 14.
