oppose themselves, if God peradven- zealous therefore, and repent.-Rev. ture will give them repentance to the iii. 2, 3. 19. acknowledging of the truth, and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.-2 Tim. ii. 25, 26.

To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, &c.-Heb. iv. 7. iii. 15. Ps. xcv. 7, 8.

Let us go on to perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, &c. for it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, &c. if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh.Heb. vi. 1. 4—6.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you: cleanse your hands, ye sinners, &c.-James iv. 8-10.

Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him, let him know, that he which converteth a sinner from the error of his way, shall save a soul from death, &c. James v. 19, 20.

For ye were as sheep going astray, but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. 1 Pet. ii. 25.

The Lord is not slack, as some men count slackness: but is long-suffering to us-ward: not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.-2 Pet. iii. 9.

Thou hast left thy first love: remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do thy first works: or else I will come unto thee quickly, &c. thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, &c. Repent, or else I will come, &c. I gave her space to repent of her fornication, and she repented not: behold, I will cast her into a bed, &c. -Rev. ii. 4, 5. 14-16. 20-22.

And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues, yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils and idols of gold, &c. neither repented they of their murders, &c. Rev. ix. 20, 21.

And men were scorched (or burned) with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, &c. and they repented not to give him glory, &c. and repented not of their deeds.— Rev. xvi. 9-11.

CHAP. XXXII.

OF DEATH; OR THE LAYING DOWN
OF THESE TABERNACLES.

AND the Lord formed man of the
dust of the ground (or dust of the
ground).-Gen. ii. 7. Job iv. 19.

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground: for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.-Gen. iii. 19.

God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace: thou shalt be buried in a good old age.— Gen. xv. 13. 15. xxv. 8.

I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes.-Gen. xviii. 27.

Sarah died, &c. and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.-Gen. xxiii. 2.

Abraham died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people, &c. Ishmael, &c. gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people.-Gen. xxv. 8. 17.

Isaac, &c. said, Behold, now I am old, I know not the day of my death. —Gen. xxvii. 1, 2. xxxv. 28, 29.

Rachel died in bearing Benjamin by the way; buried there; and Jacob set a pillar upon her grave.-Gen.

I have not found thy work perfect before God; remember therefore how thou hast received and heard: and xxxv. 17, &c. hold fast, and repent, &c. As many

hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been.-Gen. xlvii. 9.

He mourned for Joseph, refused to be comforted, and said, I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Gen. xxxvii. 34, 35.

Jacob ordered Joseph not to bury him in Egypt, but to carry him to the burying place of his fathers.Gen. xlvii. 29, 30.

Joseph wept for his father Israel when he died, and there was great mourning and lamentation for him.Gen 1. 1. 3. 10. 17.

Aaron died in the top of the mount, &c. all the house of Israel mourned for him thirty days.-Numb. xx. 28, 29. Deut. xxxiv. 8.

Balaam said, Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his !-Numb. xxiii. 7. 10.

And the Lord said unto Moses, &c. When thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered; for ye rebelled against my commandment.-Numb. xxvii. 12-14. Deut.

xxxiv. 5.

O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!-Deut. xxxii. 29. Joshua said, Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth, &c. -Josh. xxiii. 14. 1 Kings ii. 2.

Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, &c. and Samuel said to Saul, why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up?

1 Sam. xxviii. 3. 15.

David, and his men with him, mourned and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan, &e. -2 Sam. i. 11, 12.

When David's child was sick, he fasted and prayed: he said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live: but when it was dead, he rose up and did eat, and said, I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.-2 Sam. xii. 16, 17. 20. 22, 23.

David wept for Absalom his son,

and cried, O my son Absalom, my son, &c.-2 Sam. xviii. 33. xix. 4.

The child shall die, and all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave.-1 Kings xiv. 12, 13.

Elijah stretched himself upon the dead child, &c. and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee let this child's soul come into him again (or into his inward parts).-1 Kings xvii. 21, 22. Acts xx. 10.

We are strangers before thee, &c. our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.-1 Chron. xxix. 15. Zech. i. 5.

Job said, Why died I not from the womb? &c. for now should I have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept; then had I been at rest with kings, &c. there the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary be at rest, &c. they hear not the voice of the oppressor.Jobiii. 11. 13, 14. 17-19. vi. 8, 9. x. 18, &c.

Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away, blessed, &c.-Job i. 21.

Behold, he put no trust in his servants, and his angels he charged with folly; how much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth, &c. doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die even without wisdom.-Job iv. 18, 19. 21.

Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth ? are not his days also like the days of an hireling? &c. Swifter than a weaver's shuttle, &c. Thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.-Job viii. 1, 2. 6—10.

We are but of yesterday and know nothing, because our days upon the earth are a shadow.-Job viii. 9.

My days are swifter than a post; they flee away, they see no good; they are passed away as the swift ships; as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.-Job ix. 25, 26.

They that trust in their wealth, &c. none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, &c. that he should still live for ever, and not see corruption: for he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool, &c. for when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away.— Ps. xlix. 6, 7. 9, 10. 17.

Man that is born of a woman is but hand-breadth, and mine age as noof few days, and full of trouble; he thing before thee, &c. Spare me, &c. cometh forth like a flower, and is cut before I go hence, and be no more.— down; he fleeth also as a shadow, Ps. xxxix. 4, 5. 13. and continueth not, &c. seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee; thou hast appointed his bounds, that he cannot pass, &c. Man dieth and wasteth away; yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? &c. Man lieth down, and riseth not till the heavens be no more, &c. If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait till my change come. And he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. -Job xiv. 1, 2. 5. 7. 10. 12. 14. 20. Acts xvii. 26. 2 Sam. vii. 12. 1 Chron. xvii. 11.

When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.-Job xvi. 22.

The grave is mine house, &c. I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother and my sister.-Job xvii. 13, 14.

Shall any teach God knowledge? &c. One dieth in his full strength (or very perfection), being wholly at ease and quiet his breasts are full of milk, &c. and another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure? they shall lie down alike in the dust.-Job xxi. 22-26.

I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.-Job xxx. 23.

If he set his heart upon a man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath all flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.-Job xxxiv. 14, 15.

In death there is no remembrance of thee in the grave who shall give thee thanks?-Ps. vi. 5. Isa. xxxviii. 18. Ps. lxxxviii. 10-12. cxv. 17. xxx. 9.

Lord make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am: behold thou hast made my days as an

The terrors of death are fallen upon me, &c. Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days. -Ps. lv. 4. 23. cxvi. 3.

And unto God the Lord belong the issues from death.-Ps. lxviii. 20.

I have said, Ye are gods, and all of you children of the Most High: but ye shall die like men.-Ps. lxxxii. 6, 7.

What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.-Ps. lxxxix. 48.

Thou turnest men to destruction, &c. they are like grass which groweth up: in the morning it flourisheth and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down and withered, &c. The days of our years are threescore years and ten: and if by reason of strength they be fourscore, yet, &c. it is soon cut off, &c. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.-Ps. xc. 3. 5, 6. 10. 12.

He remembereth that we are dust: as for man, his days are as grass: as the flower of the field, so he flourisheth: for the wind passeth over it, and it is gone.-Ps. ciii. 14--16.

Thou takest away their breath; they die, and return to their dust.Ps. civ. 29.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.-Ps. cxvi.15.

Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.Ps. cxliv. 4. 1 Chron. xxix. 15. Ps. cii. 11.

Put not your trust in princes, nor thee; they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth: the living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day.-Isa. xxxviii. 1, 2. 10, 11. 18, 19.

in the son of man in whom there is no help his breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth in that very day his thoughts perish.-Ps. cxlvi. 3, 4.

When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish.-Prov. xi. 7. The righteous hath hope in his death.-Prov. xiv. 32.

Boast not thyself of to-morrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.-Prov. xxvii. 1.

How dieth the wise man? as the fool. Eccles. ii. 16.

A time to be born, and a time to die, &c. all go unto one place, all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again; who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth.-Eccles. iii. 1, 2. 20, 21.

As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return, to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, &c.-Eccles. v. 15, 16. Job i. 21.

The day of death is better than the day of one's birth; it is better to go to the house of mourning, &c.Eccles. vii. 1, 2. iv. 1, 2.

No man hath power of the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death; and there is no discharge in that war.-Eccles. viii. 8.

A living dog is better than a dead lion, &c. There is no work, &c. in the grave whither thou goest.-Eccles. ix. 3-5. 10.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God that gave it.— Eccles. xii. 7.

He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces.-Isa. xxv. 8.

All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: the grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it.--Isa. xl. 6-8. James i. 10, 11. 1 Pet. i. 24.

That thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass.Isa. li. 12.

The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away: none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.-Isa. lvii. 1, 2. 2 Kings xxii. 19, 20.

Lamentation and bitter weeping: Rachel weeping for her children, because they were not.-Jer. xxxi. 15. Matt. ii. 16-18.

Son of man, behold I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down, &c. My wife died, &c. this was for a sign.-Ezek. xxiv, 16-18. 24.

Go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest and stand in thy lot at the end.-Dan. xii. 13.

Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? -Zech. i. 5.

I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plague! &c.-Hosea xiii. 14. 1 Cor. xv. 55.

Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul, &c, -Matt. x. 28.

Jesus said unto the man on the cross, Verily I say unto thee, to-day Set thine house in order, for thou shalt thou be with me in Paradise, &c. shalt die, &c. I said in the cutting Father, into thy hands I commend off of my days, I shall go to the gates my spirit; and having said thus, he of the grave, &c.-The grave cannot gave up the ghost.-Luke xxiii. 42, praise thee; death cannot celebrate 43. 46. Ps. xxxi. 5.

Simeon said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.-Luke ii. 28, 29.

The beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. -Luke xvi. 22.

I must work, &c. while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work. John ix. 4.

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother, &c. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping, which came with her, he groaned in his spirit and was troubled, &c. Jesus wept.--John xi. 19. 33. 35.

Ananias and Sapphira, both fell down, and yielded up the ghost.Acts v. 5. 10.

And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!-Acts vii. 59.

And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.-Acts viii. 2.

and willing to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 2 Cor. v. 1, 2. 6—8.

I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago; whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell. 2 Cor. xii. 2.

To die is gain, &c. having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better.-Phil. i. 21. 23.

Indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.— Phil. ii. 27.

Who shall change our vile body, &c.-Phil. iii. 21.

I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.1 Thess. iv. 13.

Christ, who died for us: that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.-1 Thess. v. 10.

We brought nothing into the world: and it is certain we can carry nothing out.-1 Tim. vi. 7. Job i. 31.

He hath made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on the face of the earth, and hath determined the I am now ready to be offered: and times before appointed; and the the time of my departure is at hand: bounds of their habitation.-Acts I have fought a good fight.-2 Tim. xvii. 26. 2 Sam. vii. 12. 1 Chron. xvii. 11.

Whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord; whether we live, therefore, or die, we are the Lord's: for to this end Christ both died and rose again, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. -Rom. xiv. 8, 9.

The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, &c.-1 Cor. xv. 56, 57. We have this treasure in earthen vessels.-2 Cor. iv. 7.

He took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil: and deliver them, who through fear of death, were all their lifetime subject to bondage.-Heb.ii. 14, 15.

It is appointed unto men once to die; but after this the judgment.Heb. ix. 27.

But ye are come, &c. to the spirits of just men made perfect.-Heb. xii. 22, 23.
