London, July 31. 1714... SIR, Gave you, in my laft an Ac-Vol. VIII. with relation to Dr. Clarke * See Pol. and acquainted you, that that Reverend and Worthy Divine had made a Submission to the Upper House, which had put an End to that Affair. The Pa-State Vol. per which, about the Beginning of this VII. p. 463. Month, Dr. Clarke deliver'd to My Lords the Bishops was as follows: Dr. Clarke's Sentiments concerning the Dr. Clark's Eternal Generation of the SON, and Procefs Paper deliof the HOLY SPIRIT, &C. A ver'd to the Upper House of Convocation Concerning Vol. VIII. Concerning the Eternity of Son and Holy Με Spirit. Y Opinion is, That the Son of God was Eternally Begotten by Eternal Incomprehenfible Power and Will of the Father; and that the Holy Spirit was likewife Eternally Derived from the Father, by, or through the Son, according to the Eternal Incomprehenfible Power and Will of the Father. Concerning Preaching. Before my Book, intituled, The Scripture Doctrine, was published, I did indeed Preach Two or Three Sermons upon this Subject; but fince the Book was publish'd, I have never preach'd upon this Subject: And because I think it not fair to propofe particular Opinions where there is not Liberty of Anfwering, I am willing to promife, as indeed I intended, not to preach any more upon this Subject. Concerning Writing. I do not intend to Write any more concerning the Doctrine of the Trinity; but if I fhall fail herein, and Write any Thing hereafter upon that Subject, contrary to the Doctrine of the Church of England, I do hereby willingly fubmit my felf to any fuch Cenfares as my Superiors fball think fit to pass upon me. And whereas it has been confidently Reported, That the Athanafian Creed, and the Third and Fourth Petitions of the Litany have been omitted in my Church by my Direction, I do hereby declare, That the Third and Fourth Petitions of the Litt ny have never been omitted at all; and and that the Athanafian Creed was never Vol. VIII. omitted at Eleven a-Clock Prayers, but at the early Prayers only, for Brevity fake, at the Discretion of the Curate, and not by my Appointment. As to my private Converfation, I am not Confcious to my felf, that I have gi ven any juft Occafion for thofe Reports which have been fpread concerning me, with Relation to this Controversy; I am forry that what I fincerely intended for the Honour and Glory of GoD, and fo to explain this great Myftery, as to avoid the Herefies in both Extreams, fhould have given any Offence to this Synod, and particularly to My Lords the Bishops. I hope my Behaviour for the Time to come, with Relation hereunto, will be fuch, as to prevent any further Complaints against me. Hereupon the Upper House of Convo- Refolution of cation came to this Refolution, We ha-the Upper H. ving receiv'd a Paper fubfcrib'd by Dr. of Convocation Clarke, containing a Declaration of his thereupon, Opinion concerning the Eternity of the 'Son and Holy Spirit, together with an 'Account of his Conduct for the Time 'past, and Intention for the Time to come, (which Paper we have order'd to be entred in the Acts of this Houfe, and to 'be communicated to the Lower House) 'do think fit to proceed no further upon the Extract laid before us by the Lower 'Houfe. It is obfervable, that the Lower House protested against this Refolution. |
